Zhang Anda, a 34-year-old professional playing at world number 19, produced the biggest shock of the China Open on Saturday when he defeated defending world champion Zhao Xintong 6-5 in a dramatic opening-round match. Zhang came from 0-3 behind to lead 5-4, was then taken to a deciding frame, and eventually won after the black ball was respotted when the score reached level at 57-57.
Zhao Xintong, who entered the tournament as world number three and champion of the world title, admitted after the match that he had made too many mistakes and probably did not deserve to win. Zhang Anda, by contrast, admitted he was very nervous but managed to keep control to convert his escape into a memorable victory.
The match was one of several shocks in the opening round. John Higgins, ranked fifth in the world, was also eliminated, losing 6-4 to former world champion Stuart Bingham. Zhang Anda's next opponent will be Chris Wakelin.
Statistically, the result highlights the fragility of short-format snooker. In a best-of-11 match, a lower-ranked player can close the gap to any top opponent by focusing on defensive play and waiting for the decisive moment. The fact that Zhang was 57-0 ahead and still lost his lead shows how quickly momentum can shift, but also shows his strength in recovering after Zhao had fought back.
Zhang Anda's victory may be remembered for a long time because of the way it happened. The respotted black served as the perfect ending to a tense tactical battle. More important than a single winning shot, however, is what comes next. Before his next match against Wakelin, Zhang must show he can recover physically and emotionally from such a draining contest. Zhao, meanwhile, needs to look closely at the small errors that can cost a title in today's highly competitive snooker environment.
